Captain Kevin McCarthy an expert in the field told us a little about the local shrimping industry and how it came about. He is the owner of Amelia River Cruises & Charters and offers richly narrated sightseeing cruises. In his presentation he covered some of Fernandina’s historic waterfront and touched on the local surroundings as well. According to him we have only about 8 shrimp boats left and sadly 90% of all shrimp caught today are coming from Asia. The price of shrimp is the lowest ever. So if you go out and buy shrimp make sure you get local shrimp. You will see that not only are you supporting the local shrimp industry, the wild caught, white shrimp is one of the best tasting shrimp you can get.
